Art Workshops Towards 100 VIEWS

It is recommended that a series of lessons on artwork related to the 100 VIEWS is undertaken which could be at the same time as the poetry writing. In this way, viewing the icon has more than one purpose i.e. to look in depth at the icon in order to write about it and to paint, draw, photograph or sculpt it.

A letter home

For the inaugural Bondi Beach Public School 100 VIEWS artwork, the teacher sent a letter home to parents, as she began a four week series of lessons re the chosen icon Bondi Beach. In this way she reached out into the community with some interesting results. For example, a mother and a father of a Year 1 boy writing a letter addressed to their son about what Bondi Beach means to them over the years. Her lessons concluded with a full-scale exhibition to which parents and friends were invited as a culmination of the 100 VIEWS. Each child had their piece of work built up over the weeks from their own history and observation out of photographs, postcards, drawings, letters and real objects as a celebratory piece of art properly framed for the exhibition.

Chosen process

The teacher discussed elements such as the necessity to take a ‘looking and seeing’ walk on the beach, choosing different stimulus to focus on such as rock carvings, rock pools, people on the beach, the flags, the lifeguards, the skateboard ramp, the fish and chips shop and so on. She also discussed a ‘mixed media’ approach including letters and found objects.
